Fan Expo Vancouver 2014

By Seattle Geeky Girls on 4/23/2014

Fan Expo Vancouver was certainly the highlight event for many convention goers on Easter weekend. This year, Fan Expo was in a bigger venue and tons of work went into its production. The new venue meant lots of walking (thank goodness for the escalators!) just to get inside the hall, but great things come with a price.

The new venue offered lots of space upstairs near the panel rooms along the walls for con-goers and cosplayers to relax and rest their feet. There was a general open area in the main convention hall allowing cosplayers to get in the limelight of cameras close to the lines of people waiting for celebrity autographs. Mini-donuts were a highlight for a good percentage of the attendees, and there were lots of luncheon food options, but for those of us with wheat/gluten intolerances or worse it was slim pickings. Who eats at a con, I mean really? Coffee and granola bars suited me just fine and my meal time came around 8 each night.

Saw various company booths that stood out to me - Horror Honeys, Ghostbusters of British Columbia,  Toytraders showing off Geek Girls , and Rotoshoot (Check out the 360 view example from what they took of my Deanna Troi cosplay below).

There were quite a few premiere's of indie films in different genres.  From the web we saw such amazing entries as Nightwing Prodigal the web series.

There was also Soldiers of Earth (a BC made sci-fi action indie film)...

...and Wolf Cop.

The favorite part as a photographer was seeing all the cosplayers of every level getting out there and showing their love for everything geeky! There will be a full gallery to view here or at Undiscovered Photography's Facebook page. Had an opportunity to grab a couple of awesome cosplayers for private sessions outside of the busy convention crowds which gave them more opportunities to get themselves in character.

The last shots I got of the were of the Masquerade, and kudos goes to all those cosplayers who participated.  I must say you all did amazing! Christina and her crew did a great job bringing this event at a convention to a whole new level and we hope to see it grow with each year bringing lots more competition. Disclaimer is needed here, we (Undiscovered Photography) had some consistent technical issues this weekend and half way through getting the photos of their amazing cosplays my flash kicked the bucket.

I found there to be a lot of industry based panels, or Q&As for celebrities and as cool as all of those are, there wasn't much in terms of  “interactive, let the audience participate, entertainment” unless of course you are Bruce Campbell who turned his panel into the peoples panel and became the judge and executioner as to whether you came on stage or you got voted off. All panelists who made it on the stage, well done, and to the couple that got married by Bruce, Wayne and Garth, that was awesome! A memory to cherish. The vows could use some work but you've got time, good luck to you in your future RL wedding.

We can be found representing Seattle Geeky Girls and ourselves at Calgary Comic Entertainment Expo this coming weekend. Look forward to seeing you there!
