Tsukino Con 2014

By Seattle Geeky Girls on 2/25/2014

Tsukino is a well attended Vancouver Island convention bringing Anime, & Geek lovers alike together in Victoria. The panels are varied, everything from Q&As, audience participation games, business related, and some that go a little deeper to the heart of an issue. Swimsuit contest, talent contest, air guitar contest, panels with guests and how-to's. Since we couldn't go to all of them I wish to highlight the few we joined in on.

Preparing for a Cosplay Photoshoot:

This was an informative panel with photographers Jessie Pozzolo of Undiscovered Photography, Kevin Free of Kevin Free Photography and Catatonic Cosplay, Kasi Altair of Nerography and Kasi Altair Cosplay, and Will Box of The Will Box. Each unique in style and how they approach paid or free sessions. This panel was attended by photographers and cosplayers alike. Kevin & Kasi brought their dual experience as cosplayers to the panel and described what they would look for in a photographer as well as being photographers how they work. There was discussions on looking at a portfolio, using watermarks/contracts and why it's necessary.

Dealing with Anxiety with Takahata101

This was a very personal panel where Curtis (Takahata101 of Team Four star) shared a lot about himself and his own anxieties and how far he has come, with a lot of hard work and good friends, live with it but not let it consume his life. This was the first panel of this style that Curtis had ever done and, I know for Britany and myself, he had successfully delivered a panel where the attendees felt safe and could talk about their own anxieties, experiences and successes.

Whose Sassy line is it Anime?

The organizers Kecia and Phil of PK Cosplay did a fantastic job along with the judges. This was a panel with a lot of laughter and great improvisation. This was also for 18+ as sometimes the content was not completely PG . The improv games included Director's cut, Let's make a Date, Party Quirks, and Scenes from a Hat. All participants were hilarious and were quick on their feet!

Swimsuit Contest

This was definitely a first and not exactly what I expected. When people say, "Swimsuit contest" you think pageant style. This was a pleasant change of my original expectations with 3 male participants and 5 female participants. The talents ranged from dancing, doing push ups, and singing while staying in character. Once each contestant introduced themselves and presented their talent they were asked 5 questions which generally had the audience in stitches in laughter. The winner of this year's swimsuit contest by way of audience applause was Lachlan (Ace Ventura) with very close runner ups and the judges' favorite was Xbox 360 Bot!

Needless to say it was a good time, had by ALL! Wish I could have attended more but we had some in-character interviews happening as well as a bunch of mini sessions. Catch us at the next convention for your chance for a session. Fan Expo and Sakura are coming up next.
